At St. Rose of Lima School we treat food allergies very seriously. Our school nurses work closely with teachers, parents, and Duke Catering staff to ensure that students with food allergies are kept safe but still able to enjoy the same benefits as most students. Below is a summary of how our nurses maintain safety protocols for food allergies.
- Obtain a list of allergies for every student
- Organize by class and distribute to individual teachers and dietary service. (Duke Catering)
- Where required, children will be seated at a nut/peanut free table.
- Tables are wiped off before and after use
- Hand sanitizer is used before and after eating
- All treat ingredients are sent home for parental review and approval
- Students are not permitted to eat snacks or birthday treats sent from another student’s household in school. These will be sent home for parents to monitor in case of allergy.
- Discussions with parents/guardians is ongoing and student’s individual needs and information is conveyed to their specific teacher.
- Parents/guardians requested to provide allergy free snacks as needed.
- Request from parent/ guardian and required paperwork for Epi-Pen and Benadryl as needed for children with allergies
- Epi-pens are maintained in the nurses’ office and are available per law in a secure unlocked area to access for after-school use if needed in an emergency.
